Swim School Registration

How do I sign up for Group Lessons?

To register for Group Lessons, please call us at 703-281-2104.  We would like to talk to you personally to ensure your swimmer is placed in the correct level based on their age and ability.

How much are weekly group swim lessons?

We encourage year-round swim lessons with a strong focus on technique, so students learn the right way to swim right from the start. Learning the four competitive strokes, side breathing, and other stroke mechanics are essential for safe swimming. We find the more often students swim, the stronger they become.

Once a week group swim lessons are $99 a month, which comes to about $22/lesson. Twice a week group swim lessons are $180.

How do I sign up for Learn to Swim or Competitive Private Lessons?

To register for Learn to Swim or Competitive Private Lessons, please call us at 703-281-2104 or put in a request online.  Please note that an online request does not guarantee a timeslot until it is confirmed.  For Learn to Swim Private Lessons, we would ideally like to have you at the same time each week.  For Competitive Private Lessons, we ask that you schedule no more than one every two weeks.

How do I pay for group swim classes?

Once you register, we will put your credit card on file. Your monthly fee will be deducted from the card on file.

Do I get a discount for multiple children?

We do not offer a discount for multiple children but we do offer a referral discount when someone mentions your name upon registration.

Swim School Scheduling

I want to sign up my child for group lessons. But I want my child to swim more than once a week. Can my child swim twice a week?

Yes! Swimming once a week will begin the stroke development process, but twice a week classes will speed up learning.

Can I request a specific instructor?

We try to accommodate requests when possible; we understand that personality matters when it comes to the child and instructor match. Please tell us about your child when you register, so we can work to find the best match. Also, we also find that giving children an opportunity to learn from a variety of instructors is essential.

My child has a scheduling conflict. How do I change my class date/time?

Group lessons at Machine are scheduled on an ongoing basis at the same time each week.  However, if your swimmer’s current time no longer works with your schedule, please contact us by email, phone, or in person.  We will work with you to find a new day and time.


How do I know what classes are available?

Give us a call at 703-281-2104 to discuss your child’s needs and abilities, and we will find a class that fits your schedule.

How long are classes?

Group Learn to Swim classes are 30 minutes. Mighty Mechanic classes are 60 minutes. Competitive Swim Analysis are booked in 30 minute sessions.

Do I have to start at the beginning of the month (when is the next session)?

At Machine Swim School we have a rolling start date so you can start lessons at any point during the month/year.

Do you offer make-ups for missed classes?

Please see our make-up policy for group lessons.


Can I be refunded for a missed class or accumulated make-up lessons?

Unfortunately, due to set operational expenses we will not be able to prorate or refund missed lessons or accumulated make-ups.

How do I stop or suspend my Auto Pay?

Written notice of withdrawal from group lessons is required by the 15th of the month to stop payment for the following month. Automatic payment withdrawal will only be stopped when the withdrawal form is completed and returned to the front desk by the 15th. Clients turning in withdrawal forms after the 15th will be responsible for the next month’s payment. Machine Swim School does not provide refunds for withdrawals during the current month or for forms turned in late.

Swim Programs

Does Machine Swim School provide lessons for adults?

Yes!  We provide lessons for swimmers of all ages and ability levels.  Swimmers over 12 years old would need to be in a Private or Semi-Private setting.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes! We recognize the needs of all swimmers, and some swimmers benefit from private lessons. We find some children need private lessons for a time until they become more comfortable in the water. Call us at 703-281-2104 to schedule.

Do you offer special needs classes?

Our instructors are experienced with children with special needs. Please call us to discuss your child’s needs and we will work with to determine if a group class or a private class would best suit your child.

How many children are in each class?

Class size is based on the skills of the group. Please refer to our Group Lessons page to find a description of each level.

What should I do if my child cries during the lesson?

This is normal! As with any experience, getting to know an instructor and our swimming environment will take some time. We’re accustomed to children feeling nervous, scared, and/or unsure. Through our positive and nurturing environment, we find children become more at ease and develop a love for the water. Patience and communication is key! Please speak to one of our staff members about your concerns, and we will work together to create a positive experience for your child.

Is there a way to practice with my child outside of lessons?

Yes! We’re planning monthly Family Fun Swim Nights. Stay tuned to our social media pages and website for more information.

What do I need to bring to my lesson?

Please bring a towel, goggles, cap or hair tie (for swimmers with long hair), and a swimsuit.  All of these items are available to purchase at Machine Swim School. Mini Gizmo swimmers and swimmers who are not potty-trained, are required to wear an approved waterproof diaper.

What do we do when we arrive for lessons?

We recommend you arrive at least 10 minutes before your lesson to make sure your child is ready to go on time. Please have your child use the bathroom before class. Also, please check in on the iPads at the front desk. The Deck Manager will call students and lead them to the pool and/or tanks at the appointed time.

Where can I shower and change my child?

We have showers located on the pool deck and in our restrooms. We also have a large family shower and changing room. Several changing rooms are also located in the hallway that leads to/from our pool as well as a set of blow dryers at our hair drying station.

Why should my child swim year round?

So many reasons! Children who take swim lessons year round are just better, stronger swimmers.

+Repetition ensures stronger technique!

+Kids grow so rapidly and their bodies change so quickly. They need to keep up their skills as they change proportions.

+Swimming is the ideal exercise because it works the entire body, increases strength, and improves coordination. Also, swimming is a low-impact sport, so there is less stress to joints.

+It’s the only sport that could save your child’s life.

+Swimming teaches children how to achieve goals, increases confidence, and self-respect.

Swimmer Progress

How can I get in touch with my child's instructor?

Because our classes run back-to-back, our instructors do not have time to speak with parents between classes. However, we want to be able to give you and your child the attention you need, so we have a couple of ways for you to communicate with our staff:

  • We always have a Deck Manager on duty on the pool deck. Please feel free to flag the Deck Manager and ask your question. The Deck Manager will see that you receive an answer.
  • Fill out the Instructor-Parent Communication Form.


How do I know when my child is ready to advance?

Mastering strokes takes time and patience. We encourage parents not to compare their children to other children. Our instructors do not move children on to the next level until they have completed mastery at that level. The Deck Manager will let you know when your child is ready to move on to the next level. At that time, you can work with our front desk to schedule your next class.

How long will it take my child to learn to swim?

This is a hard question to answer because every child is different! We always encourage parents not to compare their child to another child. Children are growing as they are developing their skills, so practice and patience are the key! Swimming at least once a week year round will show the greatest gains in skills.

I don't think my child is progressing. What can I do?

Sometimes it does not look like your child is improving, but he is! All children progress at different rates. Don’t get discouraged! Please contact the Deck Manager to set up a time to discuss your child. We’re here to support you!

Facility Policies

What are your policies and procedures?

  1. Caretakers must supervise their children at all times.
  2. No food or drink allowed on the deck. We pride ourselves on a clean pool and clean space!
  3. We encourage parents to watch their child on the TV monitors rather than the pool deck. We find when parents sit on the pool deck, it’s distracting to the students and instructors.

How will I know if the facility is closed due to inclement weather?

We will update the website, our social media channels, and we will send out an email.

Group Fitness Classes

Do I need to be a member to sign up for group fitness classes?

Nope! Unlike a gym, there is no membership fee. Just sign up for the amount of class packs you want!

Do you offer fitness classes for kids?

Yes! We’re offering Kidding Around Yoga for parents and kids! More details to come.

Do I need to sign up for classes? Can I just pop in?

We require you to sign up for class, so we know how many participants we will have in class. Our space is limited, and we do not want to overfill the room.
